Summary

Resumen

In 1,500 public group-class bookings, 30.3% ended in attendance. Membership tenure showed a strong association with attendance (r = 0.49), whereas booking lead time showed none (r ≈ 0.02), and class type, weekday and time of day showed small associations (Cramér’s V ≤ 0.07) that partly reflected member composition. These patterns are consistent with research on exercise habit formation and early attrition, but diverge from clinical no-show studies on lead time. Because the data lack session capacity, timestamps and member identifiers, the results generate hypotheses rather than operational rules.

1. Principal findings

1. Hallazgos principales

Three results carry most of the information. First, bookings substantially overstate realized attendance: fewer than one in three bookings ended with the member in the room. Second, tenure dominates the operational variables: attendance rose monotonically from 3.4% among members in their first six months to 95.2% among those with more than four years. Third, apparent schedule and class effects shrink once tenure is held constant: the AM–PM gap fell from 5.4 to 4.0 percentage points with an interval that includes zero, and the category ranking changed (Aqua first in raw rates, HIIT first after standardization).

In the synthetic preference dataset, personal training and group-class participation overlapped (258 of 1,000 profiles reported both), but no class pair showed reliable co-preference: the largest lift with at least ten members, Pilates → Yoga (1.12), had a bootstrap interval spanning 1.

2. Comparison with prior work

2. Comparación con estudios previos

2.1 No-shows and lead time

2.1 No-shows y anticipación

The closest quantitative literature comes from healthcare scheduling. A systematic review of 105 studies estimated an average no-show rate of about 23% and identified long lead time and prior no-show history as the most commonly reported determinants.1 The GoalZone non-attendance rate (69.7%) is far higher, but it also includes cancellations, which the source does not separate from no-shows. The absence of any lead-time association here (r = 0.024; 95% CI −0.022 to 0.074) therefore conflicts with the clinical pattern. Plausible explanations include the coarse day-level lead-time field, the lack of same-day bookings, the mixing of cancellations with no-shows, and the possibility that gym classes, unlike medical appointments, carry no penalty for missing them. This is precisely the kind of discrepancy that real booking and cancellation timestamps could resolve.

2.2 Tenure, habit and attrition

2.2 Antigüedad, hábito y abandono

The tenure gradient is consistent with three bodies of work. Attrition among new members is severe: in a retrospective cohort of more than 5,000 members of a Brazilian fitness centre, about 63% dropped out before the third month and fewer than 4% remained active beyond twelve months.2 Members also overestimate their future attendance; in three US clubs, members on flat monthly contracts attended about 4.3 times per month, paying more per visit than a pay-per-visit pass would have cost.3 And exercise habits take time to form: new gym members needed at least four sessions per week for about six weeks to establish a habit,4 real-world habit formation took a median of 66 days with wide individual variation,5 and a machine-learning analysis of more than 12 million gym check-ins found that gym habits typically took months to form.6

Two cautions follow. Tenure is not a lever: long-tenure members are a survivor population, so the association mixes habit with selection. And the magnitude here (from 3% to 95%) is unusually extreme for behavioural data, which suggests that the educational dataset may have been generated or curated with a strong built-in tenure effect. The direction agrees with the literature; the size should not be transferred to a real club.

2.3 Why the class setting may matter

Category explained little attendance variation (V = 0.05). That is compatible with meta-analytic evidence that a standard exercise class is not, by itself, more effective than home exercise with professional contact; the advantage appeared for “true groups” that deliberately use group-dynamics strategies such as shared goals and social interaction.7 A gym that wants classes to improve attendance would therefore study how a class is run (coach, cohort continuity, social cues), not only which category it belongs to.

2.4 Reminders and behavioural interventions

2.4 Recordatorios e intervenciones conductuales

In healthcare, SMS reminders increased the odds of attending appointments (pooled RCT estimate 1.48; 95% CI 1.23–1.72), with no clear difference between reminders sent 24, 48 or 72 hours ahead.8 For gyms specifically, a megastudy of 54 four-week digital programmes among 61,293 members of a US fitness chain found that roughly 45% of interventions increased weekly visits, by 9% to 27%; the best performer rewarded returning after a missed workout, but few effects persisted after the programme ended, and expert forecasts did not identify the winners.9 The machine-learning study cited above adds that members whose behaviour is already highly predictable respond less to such nudges,6 which argues for targeting interventions at newer, less habitual members, exactly the low-attendance segment in this dataset.

2.5 Capacity, overbooking and calibration

2.5 Capacidad, sobreventa y calibración

Revenue management treats overbooking as setting a booking limit above physical capacity to hedge against cancellations and no-shows.10 In outpatient clinics, simulation showed that overbooking can improve access and productivity, but at the cost of longer waits and overtime, and that it helps most when no-show rates are high and service times vary little.11 A group class resembles that favourable case: fixed duration, many interchangeable places. But overbooking is only as safe as the attendance probabilities behind it. Poorly calibrated predictions, where a predicted 30% does not correspond to 30% observed, can mislead decisions even when a model ranks members well, and calibration is assessed far less often than discrimination.12 This is why the lab stops before prediction: without session capacity and a temporal validation set, any overbooking rule would be uncalibrated.

3. Strengths and limitations

3. Fortalezas y limitaciones

Strengths. Sources were reconciled before analysis; every coefficient reports a bootstrap interval; statistics match variable types; confounding by tenure was examined with direct standardization and partial correlation; and the two datasets were never merged into a fictitious population.

Fortalezas.

Limitations. (i) No session identifiers or capacity, so occupancy cannot be measured. (ii) No member identifiers, so repeated bookings by the same person violate the independence assumed by the intervals. (iii) Cancellations and no-shows are indistinguishable. (iv) Time is reduced to AM/PM and lead time to whole days, with no collection period. (v) The tenure effect is implausibly large, suggesting a constructed dataset. (vi) Dataset B is synthetic and supports technique demonstration only. (vii) Analyses are cross-sectional and descriptive; adjustment was linear or stratified on a single variable, so residual confounding is likely. In the language of causal inference, none of these estimates identifies the effect of an intervention.13

Limitaciones.

6. Conclusion

6. Conclusión

The gap between booked and realized attendance is large, and the variable most associated with it, membership tenure, is one that published evidence links to habit formation and early attrition. Schedule-based explanations weakened once member composition was considered. A credible capacity tool for a real club therefore depends less on more sophisticated models than on better data: session capacity, timestamps, stable member identifiers and randomized tests.
